Legionnaires’ disease: Two additional cases

Hong Kong health officials announced they are investigating two additional cases of Legionnaires’ disease in recent days.
One case is in a 57-year-old man with underlying illnesses, has presented with fever, cough with sputum and shortness of breath since January 4 and was admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) for management on January 8. The clinical diagnosis was pneumonia and he has been in stable condition all along.

Initial inquiries by the Hong Kong CHP revealed that the patient had traveled to Taishan and Zhongshan in Guangdong from December 22 to 24, 2014, on his own. The health authority of Guangdong will be informed. Investigations are proceeding.

The second case is in a 77-year-old man underlying illnesses, has presented with fever, cough, shortness of breath and malaise since January 5 and was admitted to Kwong Wah Hospital for management on January 8. The clinical diagnosis was pneumonia and he is now in stable condition.

The second patient had no travel history.

Both cases had urine samples that tested positive for Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 antigen.

These are the 2nd and 3rd Legionnaires’ disease cases of 2015. Last year, Hong Kong saw 41 cases.
